Susan is Head of Occupational Health & Wellbeing at Yorkshire Water and previously worked at Bradford Metropolitan District Council. An experienced occupational health professional she has an outstanding record of achievement created through the development and implementation of robust strategies, initiatives and organisational change in occupational health.  She was previously a visiting lecturer in sickness absence management at Leeds Becket University and has a BSc(Hons) in Occupational Health,  an MA in Health Care Law  and an MSc in Leadership and Change in Health and Social Care.

  • Exploring the mental health first aid training initiative which is being rolled out to 3,700 employees to give staff and leaders more confidence in addressing concerns at work
  • Outlining how other organisations can provide training through ensuring Occupational Health (OH) staff have a Mental Health First Aid England qualification
  • Highlighting how Yorkshire Water have successfully enrolled 700 employees on the training since 2017 and achieved a 48% decrease in the number of OH referrals to counselling
  • Addressing physical health in conjunction with mental health through a Slimming World initiative to support workers in their diet, successfully recruiting 73 employees losing a total of 88 stone in 2018
  • Demonstrating how a company can change its culture to focus on investing in people and doing so by taking an early intervention approach of referring staff to OH on day one of absence
