Specialist Lead on Mental Health and Wellbeing in the Workplace,
Acas

Abigail is Acas Deputy Director for the West Midlands and the Acas specialist lead on mental health and wellbeing in the workplace. She has recently led a strategic review into workplace mental health which has resulted in a new framework for thinking about and tackling poor mental health. As an experienced Senior Acas Advisor, she works with Senior Leadership Teams within organisations to identify their key challenges, before developing bespoke practical solutions and helping them rollout effectively to improve business wellbeing and increase productivity. Before joining Acas, Abigail worked in Higher Education, initially as Head of the Counselling and Mental Health Service, and then as a Senior Researcher. Abigail has an MSc in Psychology and an MA in Psychotherapy and  is an experienced practitioner who has worked extensively with individuals and groups on a range of issues around mental health and wellbeing.

  • Emphasising the importance of all parties in the workplace relationship knowing their role and trusting one another to take responsibility for the positive mental health of all colleagues
  • Tackling the causes of workplace stress, putting policies in place to support people, having effective difficult conversations, and the individual’s responsibility to look after their own wellbeing
  • Aiding the recovery process by implementing effective return to work management – good communication between line manager, occupational health and the employee.
  • Ensuring that employers are considerate of post-return to work adjustments and support including phased return, flexible hours and reduced job tasks or workload
